Purchasing Property Abroad

July 26th, 2008

It is very important when purchasing property abroad that you do your research, check out that all the information is up to date. You need to check out the laws concerning purchasing property in the country of your choice, what you are used to in your home country can be very different in another. For example in England, you are never 100% sure the sale is complete until the actual day as the buyer can pull out. In France, when you sign to buy a property you have 7 days to change your mind then you are committed to the purchase. Always seek out expert advice, use a lawyer/solicitor fluent in yours and the country’s language you are purchasing in, alternatively pay for a translation to make sure you know exactly what you are buying. We’ve all heard the stories of people purchasing property in Spain that have been illegally built so make sure you you are properly represented and don’t get caught out. Finally don’t forget the added expenses involved in purchasing property, legal fees, stamp duty, taxes, surveys etc.
